Travel jewellery — designing for suitcases and hostels
The travel brief: everything packs flat, survives luggage, and losing one piece is annoying — not tragic.
Travel jewellery solves a real problem: looking finished in a backpack.
The design constraints
- Packable — flat profiles, no protruding focal spikes; chains that
coil without kinking. - Tangle-proof — sliders and short lengths, or pack-threaded through
card slots (length planning). - Loss-tolerant materials — the piece should be good, not
irreplaceable: plated over solid, treated stones over heirlooms. - Security details — screw clasps or magnets with safety chains;
nothing dangles off a zipped jacket unnoticed.
The collection opportunity — a "travel capsule" of 3-5 packable
pieces is a coherent, sellable collection concept (the collection method).
The test — one week in one pouch. Whatever tangles, chips or snags
goes back to the bench.
What students say
“I will use the skills learnt to develop a line of metalsmithed jewellery.”

“Attended the courses here and it's worth way more than what you have to pay for. The instructors are all super approachable and welcoming everytime they see you. The tools needed are provided and you get to bring home the crafts that you make during the class. Even the class schedules are pretty flexible. I enjoyed myself here a lot and will definitely sign up for more classes.”
